Two Sundays ago I was invited by EV Cannonball Record holders Carl Reese & Deena Mastracci to a little place called the Portofino Inn. This was the finish line for several of the infamous Cannonball Runs. On October 18th, 2015, it would become the start line of something new.  Continue reading

An Autonomous Winter Is Coming For Car Manufacturers

Alex Roy's LiveDriveRepeat

Winter is coming for car manufacturers. An Autonomous Winter, without end. If you’ve seen what Tesla is doing with Autopilot, and all they plan to do with it, you’ve already seen the future. Now it’s up to automakers to figure out what they want to be in this new world as quickly as possible.

Check out my new piece on the future of Autonomous Cars over at Jalopnik

Jack Baruth Chimes In: “Why Diesel Needs To Die”

9 Oct

Anyone who has bothered to ask me already knows the answer. The two greatest automotive journalists who’ve ever lived are L.J.K. Setright and Jack Baruth. Setright, alas, is no longer with us, but left us as his magnum opus the dense and brilliant Drive On, which is a must-read for anyone who claims to know anything about car culture. Baruth has yet to bless us with a book, but in the meantime he’s got a voluminous back catalogue at TTAC and now Road & Track. I could go on and on about why I look forward to his columns, but his work really speaks for itself. Continue reading

Why AWD Is Like Wearing A Condom To A Gunfight: This Article Will Save Your Life

Alex Roy's LiveDriveRepeat - Winter Tires

I can’t remember how many times a friend has bragged to me about their brand new SUV. Especially annoying are those who brag about having bought the “special edition,” usually named after a long-dead explorer who probably froze to death, or some guy who invented a piece of clothing too expensive for explorers. That’s the funny thing about explorers, and people who risk their lives in general. They don’t care about brands or special editions. They only care about what works. Continue reading

Want To See Alex Roy Speak @ SXSW?

6 Sep

Alex Roy
I need your help. Hot on the heels of my appearance on Futurist HeatherVescent’s Podcast “The Future of Cars and the Open Road”, she invited me to her panel @ the 2016 SXSW.

For that to happen, we need your vote.

The panel is called “The Automotive Singularity is Not Near.” In order for it to be approved, we need votes, which means signing in and voting, which should take all of 15 seconds. Today is the last day of voting, and of course, in a democratic system, every vote counts. I hope.

We’ll be joined by Envisioneering Founder, Technologist, Cannonball Run veteran & U.S. Express organizer Rick Doherty, and former Jalop and Auto tech genius Damon Lavrinc. For a taste of what Heather and I discussed last month, here’s the podcast…

Alex Roy is the founder of Team Polizei, a columnist for Jalopnik, a host on /DRIVE, author of The Driver, President of Europe By Car, Producer of The Great Chicken Wing Hunt & 32 Hours 7 Minutes, was Chairman of The Moth from 2002-2007, won The Ultimate Playboy on Sky One, has competed in LeMons & the Baja 1000, and holds a variety of driving records, most notably the 2006 NY-LA Transcontinental Driving Record, accomplished in 31 hours and 4 minutes.
